Now that the Sony a1 is out, a lot of the market’s attention has been turned toward Canon and Nikon, who are readying the EOS R3 and Z 9, respectively, for announcement. It looks like Canon’s EOS R3 will arrive first, in just a few months.
We recently learned the Nikon Z 9 will be announced likely in November or December. As the company’s flagship mirrorless camera, it will represent their most advanced technology to date, meant to compete directly with Sony’s a1. While we know the EOS R1 will be Canon’s equivalent flagship camera, it is the EOS R3 that is next in line, and many of its specs will keep pace or even exceed those of the Z 9 and a1, with features like 30 fps continuous bursts, eye-controlled autofocus, and the company’s first full frame backside-illuminated sensor, which should provide improved dynamic range and low-light performance. Canon Rumors is reporting that the camera will be announced in September of this year, a few months ahead of the Z 9. This is unsurprising, as the EOS R3 will likely be in the hands of many photographers at the Olympics, and surely, Canon wants to get it to market as soon as possible given the strong competition at the moment. The second half of the year should be quite exciting!
